How to decide if too quit and Anitdepressant

Posted by Stryker88 on March 5, 2004, at 18:18:37

I realize that meds are not the answer to everything, and eventually I need to get off, but I cannot decide. I am afraid of reality and dealing with all the problems I still have. Effexor puts me in a good mood, but maybe excersise will be better. MY $#@$ DOC PRESSURES ME INTO TAKING THIS PILL, HE $#@#$ GETS UPSET WHEN I SAY I WANT OFF, I DONT THINK THE @!@#^%$#^%# OF A !@%$#@%$#@ BE HAPPY IF I TOLD HIM I WANT OOFF

Hi Stryker,

First, it sounds like you might need a new pdoc. Pressuring a client into taking a medication is very unprofessional and makes me question his abilites as a doctor.

Going off of meds is a difficult decision to make. You have to consider whether or not you feel ready to live without them. Have they cured your depression, or whatever illness it is you're combating with the medication? If it has, by all means, stop taking them.

If it hasn't, try waiting another few months and then re-evaluate your situation. This is of course, only my advice. You need to do what will work for you. Best of luck.

K.

You should probably do all the support stuff before getting off of SSRI's. So, do your exercising every day, go to a good therapist for a while, get into meditation, etc... Then, when you go off (if you want to), it won't be so hard. Personally, the withdrawal from the SSRI I took (Zoloft) was not easy. So, you need the tools in place ahead of time.
Good luck!

Sounds like you don't injoy the side-effects. Or the idea of taking medication. True eventualy you will need to get off, but don't worry about it.

>I am afraid of reality and dealing with all the problems I still have.<

Sounds like you think the medication is helping.

>Effexor puts me in a good mood, but maybe excersise will be better.<

Take the meds and exercise also. If you improve, your doctor might be convinced you don't need as much, eventualy none.

Your doctor probably sees improvement in your condition and wants to keep helping, by looking out for your best interest, which seems to be the medication.

I think you should keep taking it untill you get better.

Well, if you will do it, whay about psychotherapy, exercise, and puytotherapy and/or orthomolecular. This last can really help you if you depression is mild and still have positive effects in your health. Its a try.
