I don't know what else you've tried but I avoid zyprexa because of the possibility of TD. Zyprexa can mask the TD but there have been reports of people getting it after even short periods on the drug.
If you have tried every SSRI without success. I would try some of the milder tricyclics first, as long as you aren't suicidal. Amitriptyline pulled me out of a deep funk (pre-Prozac days) and I saw green trees for the first time. You don't want it though because of heavy SE's. Nortriptyline or Desipramine would be better choices. Talk it over with your doc especially if you haven't tried all of the other safer options. If you end up needing Zyprexa to live a normal life, it's still a very effective drug. If it was all that worked for me, I'd do it.

TD is Tardive Dyskinesia

http://www.psyweb.com/Diction/tardived.html

"Tardive Dyskinesia is a serious, irreversible neurological disorder that can appear at any age. Tardive Dyskinesia is a side effect of taking antipsychotic / neuroleptics drugs. Symptoms can be hardly noticeable or profound. Symptoms involve uncontrollable movement of various body parts, including the body trunk, legs, arms, fingers, mouth, lips, or tongue. Once any symptom of Tardive Dyskinesia appear, the antipsychotic / neuroleptic must be discontinued. About 20 percent of people taking antipsychotic / neuroleptic drugs for more then one year will be affected."

I wouldn't take AP's (AntiPsychotic drugs) unless I truely needed them.

Cheers,
Panda.

My experience on Effexor + Zyprexa

I was first started on Effexor for depression with psychotic features ... up to 300mg. Then they added Seroquel but that zombified me.

And then my doctor gave me 5mg of Zyprexa. It was fine for a week, but once it had had time to accumulate in my system all hell broke loose. It apparently lowers the seizure treshold and it gave me petit-mal seizures dozens of times a day ... I had trouble talking and involuntary jerks. It happens to some people.

I guess my advice is make sure you're started on a small dose ... 1.25 or 2.5 and be carefull ... talk to your doc if you experience any wacky side effects. From waht I understand its on the "heavy artillery" side of atypicals. But for some people it can be a life saver.

Doesn't sound like a lot of fun. Efexor is a very pro-convulsant med too, it's been shown to be as bad or even worse than tricyclic AD's.

Cheers,
Panda.

You know, I think the funniest part is where my doctor didn't warn me of any side effects the damned pills might have. Good thing I didn't seize in the middle of the street. I don't drive but he doesn't know that ... wouldn't that have been a blast having a seizure while at the wheel.

And my doctor wonders why I question and act suspicious every time he gives me something new :P
