Remeron

Posted by marfaith on January 22, 2004, at 12:02:57

Is anyone taking remeron? I started taking it the end of September. I have gained 30 lbs since then. I have always been the person who could eat anything and never gain a pound. Does Remeron slow down a persons metabolism? I am now exercising (which I never did) and watching what I eat. I know your metabolism slows down as you get older, but all at once? Any info would be great. I see my doctor in a couple of weeks and I may see about trying something else.

I took Remeron for two weeks for sleep to supplement Effexor in the AM. It worked GREAT!

Too great actually...

I gained 10 pounds in two weeks so I'm off it now and my Doc's put me on Topomax,, which might end up to be a good move in the end as I have a neuro-chemical chronic depression coupled with ADHD and bipolar tendancies.

The Topomax should help with the weight gain AND mood swings AND sleep. we'll see. After three month of experimentation, I'm open to anything that doesn't kill me:

After all, taking nothing wasn't exactly whistlin' Dixie...

I tried Remeron last year and gained quite a bit of weight, and like you, I'm the kind who could eat loads of high-calorie food and never gain an ounce. This is definitely a problem with Remeron. I don't know if it affects metabolism or not.

The only thing I can think of is: how much is your present dose? If it's possible for you to lower it, then perhaps that might make a difference in the weight gain. Try doing this before deciding to quit the drug--especially if it seems to be working for your depression.

Actually, the way Remeron works is counter-intuitive. Supposedly the higher doses have less side effects: the reason why I was up to 60mg, but it didn't help in my case, and any higher doseages would not have been effecatious for the sleep I was trying to get.

Thanks for the suggestions. I would have to say that it did help with the depression. Maybe not as much now as it did at first. I still sleep good. I see my doctor on the 10th and I am going to see what he thinks about increasing the med (I am taking 30mg now) or trying something else. I have really been watching what I eat and have been exercising everyday. I don't mind the exercising, it's the watching what I eat! I have lost 5 lbs but have 15 to go. My main problem is depression/anxiety. I take Xanax when needed.
