Hello I have a question re. Lithium.
Someone on a an online support group I am on is bipolar. She is having trouble with mania. I asked her why she wasn't on lithium and she said she had enough lithium in her body and that wasn't the problem.
Now she didn't mean that she was on lithium and that her levels were at the therapeutic dose, she meant that there is enough lithium in her brain. When I asked her about this she said that lithium is a natural ocurring salt in the brain and one of the tests to see if you are bipolar is to do a lithium test.
????????
I have NEVER hear heard of this. Never. Is it true? Do we have lithium in our brains and can the levels be measured?
I don't understand. Can someone explain it to me. Am I really stupid?

Personally, I think that is utter nonsense.
Firstly I don't think there is any common test that can detect the presence of lithium in the brain.
The brain cannot aquire, nor utalize enough dietary lithium to treat bipolar disorder. Lithium deficiancy does not cause bipolar disorder in normal people.
The only thing I can think of, is that she is seeing some natural health practioner who is using alternative methods to treat the disorder.
Perhaps he based his "lithium sufficiant" prognosis on some tests he did.Linkadge

I thought it was silly myself but I was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. But not anymore.
Thanks for responding.
