Hi.

I know of a few people who have tried it and eventually gave up on it. They reported a significant antidepressant effect early on. Then, for some reason, they began to feel sedated and became somnolent. I have very little idea how prevalent that pattern of response is.

You might also take a look at ropinerole (Requip). My doctor mentioned it as a possible treatment for me.

If he happens to mention weather it effected his mood for the positive (or negative)

it is suppsed to have some significant antidepressant properties.

What SLS said is right on. Mirapex was a miracle for me when I first tried it, providing me with boundless motivation, creativity, and freedom from depression (I believe I was taking it along with Klonopin and Lexapro at the time... not exactly sure). After several months I began to experience narcoleptomimetic side effects though... too bad. I've heard Symmetrel (amantadine -- another dopamine agonist) may be a better option, though anyone I've spoken with whose tried Requip reports experiences identical to that which I went through with Mirapex.

When you discontinued it did you have withdrawl ?

Do you think that if you restarted it, you would have more effect ??

Also, what are you taking now ??

There was absolutely no withdrawal, and from what I hear this is generally true with all dopamine agonists.

I think I achieved the maximum effect possible from the dose I was on (1.5mg three times daily -- the max FDA-approved dosage). I felt absolutely wonderful (and posted about Mirapex often here on PB) while I was taking it, until the sleep attacks kicked in.

Now I take 20mg Prozac, 60mg Adderall XR, and 8mg Klonopin for social anxiety, depression, generalized anxiety, agoraphobia, panic disorder, and a touch of OCD and ADD. I also switch back and forth every two weeks (to avoid tolerance) between one gram of chloral hydrate and 200mg of Tuinal for sleep.

I am on imipramine and buspar for my depression and related anxiety. The mirapex came long before the aforementioned meds....and if I do not take it, I run in my sleep all night and do not get much rest, so my mood if affected by that. But, no, I do not notice any change in mood because of the chemical properties of Mirapex.

I don't take pramipexole myself. However pramipexole is more and more used in the treatment of bipolar depression with or without lamotrigine. It acts quickly (with a low risk of switching) and has a very safe profile. I have a relative of mine who has been on Mirapex for 1 year and he just swears by it.

Could tyrosine supplementation possibly prevent this? I mean, does anyone have an idea why the effects change?

Off the top of my head, I wouldn't think that tyrosine of phenylalanine would help. It wouldn't hurt to try, though. I don't think the problem lies with dopamine depletion, but rather, changes in receptor sensitivity.

Can you tell me more about the use of Mirapex and/or Amantadine for depression? Did you use them alone or as augmentors? What do you mean by sleep attacks? Is it common for someone to develop sleep attacks after being on Mirapex?

I'm a musician and have been without creativitiy and motivation to play, perform, compose for too long. I don't even listen to the wonderful symphonies I did before this darkness of depression hit 13 years ago. ANy info would be greatly appreciated - because I'd like to talk to my doc next week about it.

Much thanks!!!

Jerry

I,too, would like some feedback on this situation:I am working with a 62 yr.old woman recovering from knee reconstructive surgery. The progress has been very slow and painful for her, cause she loves to exercise. It helps quell her RLS at night. She takes Mirapex for her RLS.Is this the main ailment the drug is Rx,ed for? What other things is it used for?My client is very depressed from not being able to exercise, but her Dr. gave her very restrictive rehab rules and she takes nothing else other than an occasional Celebrex.Festus
