Hello,
Any tried this Riluzole drug?? I understand its some sort of glutamate antagonist... I believe its for ALS... I'm also wondering whether my bad reaction to lamictal (overwhelming side-effects) prevents me from having a good response to riluzole??
Thanx for any replies

I am also interested in riluzole. Despite your negative reaction to Lamictal, I don't think it makes sense to rule it out. The state of the art is not yet to the point where one can be confident in predicting how any one individual will react to any given drug. It would be a shame if an exercise in logic prevents you from finding the drug that works for you. Please post of your progress. Good luck.

I am new to Lamictal, now at 200 mg. Could you tell me more about your experience on Lamictal?
I don't like how I feel, but can't tell if it is because I increased my Effexor from 225 mg. to 300 mg. or if it is the Lamictal or if it is both meds in combination. I feel like I constantly have butterflys in my stomach, my chest feels tight, I feel more aware of my heart beating, very anxiety-like feelings, yet I don't go into a panic. Very strange. Thank you for sharing. :) Anne

I also have expressed interest in Rilutek on this board several times in the past. It's neuroprotective, due to glutamate/NMDA-receptor antagonism, and it also increases the action of GABA through several mechanisms, making it perhaps an ideal candidate for some people with anxiety disorders. It's also being studied as a treatment for depression.
It was one of the drugs on my list of meds I've yet to try, but now I'm (finally) happily on Prozac, Klonopin, Adderall, Tuinal, and Somnote. Should I decide to give Rilutek a try though one day, I'll keep you posted!

Hiya Scott,
Tuinal is a combination of 50mg amobarbital (Amytal) and 50mg secobarbital (Seconal). The name stands for "two-in-all", lol. Somnote are generic 500mg capsules of chloral hydrate (Noctec). Since my doctor put me on these, I can honestly say I've never slept better. :-)

I tried it. It didn't really lift any depression, but did relieve some muscle tension. I gave up on it as I felt it wasn't doing enough. I also wasn't able to get to a decent dosage or it made me dumb. Minor weight gain associated too.

Well, I have always been historically very med sensitive.. On lamictal, I got this killer headache with substantial insomnia.. It didn't help with my depression whatsoever.. I understand my reaction was the most common to lamictal... I can't help but think that your reaction is more likely due to the increase in effexor, as the norepinephrine reuptake inhibition is often associated with anxiety..
Best of luck AnneL

Thanx to all who replied,
As lamictal is also a glutamate antagonist, I was wondering whether the glutamate antagonism associated with riluzole would translate into a similar reaction to both drugs.. and since i had an awful reaction to lamictal, i was wondering whether trying riluzole would even be worth it... but i understand its at phase II development, so im guessing it has potential..
May the force be with us,
