NARDIL - 3 weeks and nothing's happening!

Posted by Jasmine on December 30, 2003, at 13:15:52

I'm so frustrated!! Tomorrow will be 3 weeks on Nardil and I am not getting even the slightest benefit from it. My social anxiety is worse than ever and I'd still rather stay inside and hide from the world rather than go out and enjoy life.

I hate to be so negative amongst all of these positive posts, but I'm just wishing that after all the meds I've tried (Paxil, Xanex, Celexa, Prozac, Ativan, Effexor) I could find something that actually works. I know I should probably raise my dose, but I have to wait for 2 more weeks until I see my doctor again before that happens or else I'll run out of my supply of Nardil and that's not good.

I was also wondering if anyone experienced insomnia while on this med. At first I was sleeping like a baby on it, but then 2 days ago I began waking up about 3 hours into my sleep and couldn't fall asleep again for another few hours. It's kind of annoying. I had a few other side effects in the beginning that have now gone away. Does anyone think this one will go away too?? I sure hope so because I LOVE to sleep!!! It's my favorite past time. :)

Anyway, thanx for listening to me ramble on and on. If anyone has any opinion, please let me know. :)

Despite what some may say, Nardil isn't magical, and it doesn't work for everyone.

However, you very likely need to increase your dose to be sure. What are you taking now? Can't you call your doctor and have a prescription for more called in?

Good luck.

Thanx. I'm only taking 45mg at the moment, and my doctor isn't experienced with MAOIs so she's scared to increase my dose too quickly. I realize not every med works for everyone, but I have a close friend who it's worked miracles for and it gave me such hope. Maybe I'm one of those unlucky people who never finds something that works.

I haven't tried Nardil, but wanted to wish you luck in finding the right medication. It's a difficult process. Hang in there.

I had to wait 4 weeks, and 45mg probably isn't enough. I had to increase to 75mg before I felt the socialy anxiety benefit. When it did kick in it was such a help. Still working well after 2 years :)

That's great to hear cosis! I'm so glad it's working for you. And it's nice to hear that it helped with social anxiety. I read so much about how it helps depression, but I haven't heard many stories about it helping SA. That makes me feel a lot better. Thank you.

I experienced some insomnia with Nardil. I used to sleep past 10:00 a.m. nearly every morning, which made working in my chosen field more difficult. Since I've been on Nardil, I usually wake at about 5:30. I usually feel pretty rested as long as I went to bed at a reasonable time. While I was on pain meds for a bad tooth, however, I started waking earlier and earlier and could not get back to sleep (for some reason codeine does that to me.) After that I went back to late sleeping for a bit, but now seem to be back to regularly getting up early.

But this meant I had to give my favorite hobby as well--sleeping late. I do miss it at times, especially on weekends, but it is SO worth it to have remission from depression!

Good luck in this trial. I am on 45 mg since Aug. but I am often quite sensitive to meds. Also being treated for atypical depression versus social anxiety. Perhaps an increase will work for you.

I'm glad it's working for you. :) How long was it before you began to feel the effects on 45 mg?

If it were me, I would call the doc and leave a message that I need a dose increase. Also leave the phone number of the pharmacy.

I agree that you should explain to your doctor that you want to increase the dosage. I didn't get much result from Parnate (another MAOI) until I went above the average dose. The resident Nardil evangelist, Ace, takes 90 mg/day, and this does not exceed the normal dose range. If your doctor is hesitant, possibly you could get him or her to consult with a good older psychiatrist who has more experience with MAOIs.

You definitely shouldn't give up on Nardil until you have reached 90 mg/day (assuming you can tolerate any side effects).

Good Luck

There are more stories of Nardil helping SA than any other drug. Do a search you will be pleasantly suprised :)

I think I was feeling effects as early as within two to three weeks. But from reading others' posts, that seems lucky. It may take longer for many others.
