ECT or TMS for Schizoprhrenia

Posted by MelD on December 20, 2003, at 12:07:26

My sister in law is schizophrenic, with depression and anorexia. No meds have truly helped her with her biggest problem, auditory hallucinations. Her doc wants her to try ECT now and everything i read says ECT is great for the depression but has little or no effect on hearing voices. The bit of research ive done seems to indicate TMR, done with magnets, gives the best relief for the voices. She lives near NYC, where they are doing this procedure. Can anyone give me advice or info on this? Thank you, Melodie

ECT is not known to be effective for Schizophrenia, but perhaps her doctor wants to help with depression. TMS research has been done on auditory hallucinations. It's not an approved treatment; I don't think anyone out there is offering treatment in this area--it's all research as far as I know. Yale has done research in this area.

Sorry to offer so little positive help...
