Wellbutrin and Lexapro experience

Posted by RayJ on December 5, 2003, at 20:23:30

Just did a google search on "wellbutrin amphetamine addiction" and came across this site. What a great resource!

I am getting off Wellbutrin after 10 days and going back to Lexapro.

I've been diagnosed with mild depression after recently starting an alcohol recovery program. My dr. initially put me on Lexapro for a month and of course I discovered its sexual side effects. He then decided to switch me to Wellbutrin to see how I do with it...1 week at 150mg, then up to 300mg.

The Lexapro, other than the sex thing, was great...the world was wonderful, everything was in balance, my AA sponsor always said I sounded so happy for someone new to the program.

After a couple of days on the Wellbutrin, things started to slide. I got irritable, cranky with the kids, stressed out at work again, and not wanting to be around other people. Then I bumped it up to 300mg. Holy cow! Years ago I had a little problem with crystal meth, and daytimes on 300mb of Wellbutrin feel exactly the way I used to feel after a four-day speed binge. You practically have to rake me off the ceiling. I lost all interest in AA or the book or my steps, and even though I haven't started drinking again, I sure do remember that a few beers was what calmed me down after a speed binge.

I explained all this to the dr., and he's putting me back on the Lexapro, starting tomorrow.

Hope this little anecdote can be of use to someone, and hope I didn't go on for too long (I'm, uh, still kind of wired.)

Does anybody have any experience with this transition (WB to Lexapro)? My dr. said it should be no problem, but I've seen posts here that talk about WB withdrawal.

Thanks,

Ray

I know exactly what you mean about the Wellbutrin. I've been sober for seven months and in AA and after drinking for the past 20 years I've had to discover how I really feel, it can be tough.

I am sorry to hear you are having a tough time.. Yhis beings said, I took a combination of 150 mg wellbutrin and 20mg lexapro for nearly 5 weeks (about four months ago) It was horrible. I was being treated for depression and I nearly ended up with panic-attacks. Wellbutrin had a very anxiety-provoking side effect on me. Even though I dropped it five weeks later, it took me nearly two months to get rid of that anxiety. Now myy pdoc lowered the lexapro to 10, and uped the Lithobid to 900 and I am not happy either. I am sooo tires all the time. But I remember being energetic and happy first five six days of Lithobid--that was three weeks ago. best of luck, daisy

Here is my experience with Lex 20 mg and WB 150 mg:

I have been on Lex for about 8-9 months, which worked nicely for a while, but with sexual side effects and constantly waking myself up in my dreams. Since I started WB, I no longer have the problem of waking myself up in my sleep, but no noticeable change in sexual SE yet. I had some panic attacks the first week, but I am on a tiny dose of Klonopin daily which seems to help with that. I want to try upping the WB to 300 mg a day to see how that goes, but will hold off for a little while longer.

All the best to everyone,
psychlover
