I used to take topomax and was bothered very much by the cognitive side effects. I had a hard time with concentration and remembering things. Anyway, now I am back on depakote. However, I am gaining my weight back and I am getting so depressed over gaining the weight back so I'm wondering if anybody has topomax with depakote with good results. I am also on effexor (anti-depressant) and my pdoc does not want to take me off of my effexor at this time. Any advise at this time would be appreciated .
Also, would you lose weight with the topomax and the depakote together?

I've heard of people taking the two (depakote and topamax) together. I would think you would still lose weight. But, at what dose did you lose weight with topamax? And will you be able to get that high of a dose, without the cognitive side effects becoming bothersome? I ask because I am on topamax and didn't begin to lose weight until I hit aobut 200 mgs. The cognitive problems began at that level. I am currently at 300 mgs. The problems eventually went away on their own for me, thank goodness. Umm, some people do lose weight at a lower doe of topamax though. But, are you willing to take an extra medication with soem possible side effects to lose weight? (I know I would!! Just giving you some thing to consider...) I was interested in topamax because of weight gain from lithium, adn lithium wasn't working for me anymore. And I'm glad I tried it because it is controlling my moods wonderfully. Tkae care!! And I hope the combo works for you! KAren
