I'm embarrassed to ask but do any of you know if AD's have an effect on birth control?
Let's just say that monthly events aren't the same since I increased my dose of Lexapro.
Is there a chemical in ADs that makes BC less effective?

Hi Wildflower - I asked my p-doc about effects on BC and he said there were none. I have read several posts, tho, that indicated some women have longer durations of periods while on Lex or other ADs. I've only been on it a couple weeks, so I don't have first-hand knowledge yet! Have you had some sort of effect?

Yes, it's much longer and heavier than normal. My doc is sending me for an ultrasound before attributing it to the AD.

On Paxil and the pill, I first skipped periods, then had breakthrough bleeding....my med doc said it was due to the paxil...
It settled down after about 3 months....

Good luck with the doctor's visit, let us know what he/she says! There must be some physiological connection as so many posters have reported the same phenomenon!

Becareful with AD's and birth control. Anything that affects the neurotransmitters of the brain, also affects your metabolism, which in turn affects your hormones. This is especially true if you AD affects epinephrine/norepinphrine levels. St. John's Wart has been associated with failed birth control. Most ADs will warn against relying on hormonal birth control methods. Be careful!!
