I have gained weight on Parnate and my pdoc just prescribed Topamax to aid in controlling carb cravings. Has anyone taken Topamax for this purpose, and could you tell me how it worked for you? Thanks, Melodie

Hi Melodie, I originally was put on Topamax for mood stabilization, but it worked more for my weight actually. I have gained a lot of weight over the years on and off these meds, but also because I haven't really tried to lose what I have gained.
Topamax was a great help. It worked well and I lost 25 pounds. My tastes changed for certain things, etc. and my appetite decreased a lot!
Please, if you have anymore questions~let us know.
We're glad you're here:-)

Does Topamax help augment the MAOI's in anyway? Did the Topamax make you groggy or sleepy during the day? It's an option my Dr. wants to try - but I'm already to fatigued that I don't want to add antyhing that will make me even more fatigued.
Thanks
Jerry

Gal - thanks for the positive info! It helps a lot, because i hate starting new meds and your post made me feel more hopeful about it.
Jerry, i havent started it yet - im taking it for the first time tomorrow at bedtime because i dont have to work the next day. I will answer your question about sedation as soon as i know. From what ive read about it, Topamax is a possible mood stabilizer for bi-polars.
Thank you both for the responses, and take care! Melodie

Hi jerry:-) I have NO experience with MAOI's, wish I could help you there~sorry :(
At first, yes, Topamax made me VERY groggy. It passed about the 2 1/2 month mark for me anyway. The only way I counteracted it was sleep!
I lost 25 pounds on Topamax~it was great, but I have gained some back since going off Topamax :(
I should have stayed on it!
Good luck~keep us posted:-)
