nardil: will irritability increase at higher dose?

Posted by craig allen on September 14, 2003, at 8:55:17

i started on nardil almost 5 weeks ago. one week at 30mg, two at
45mg, coming up on 2 weeks at 60mg. i first noticed that i was more
irritable at 45mg during the second week. at 60mg it's been worse,
although somewhat better than the first week at 60 i think. i'm
pretty sure i've read that people get more of an anti anxiety effect
at doses more in the 75 - 90 range. is this true? if so, i'll push
my dose. my fear however, is that i'm going to get even more
cranky. i should also note that i am doing better on nardil,
increased irritability aside. i have more energy, i'm more inclined
to be social. since i'm still relatively new on the drug, i'm
hoping i'll continue to improve. any advice on what to do with my
dosage at this point would be greatly appreciated.

Hey. i would remain at 60mg for awhile, especially if you're doing well aside from the irritability. The thing is, every time you increase the dose, it can take awhile (even up to several weeks i believe) for your neurons/ receptors to adapt, so if one is increasing the dose every week or so, s/he might not be able to determine if the effects are stable or if they're just from temporary adaptation. For instance, i was doing well on 45mg for a couple weeks, and then since i upped to 60 last week i have been feeling worse. i'm not sure if it's the med or just me i dunno, but i'm gonna wait and see if it gets better & then decide whether to stay or go back to 45. Anyway that's my advice. Good luck.

thanks for your thoughts. i had another bad day today. everyone i came in contact with i wanted to take a baseball bat to. i decided i need to cut my dose back at least. if that doesn't help, i'm going to pitch the nardil. i only took 30 today and i'm thinking i'll take none tomorrow. resume with either 30 or 45 on wed, not sure yet. i wanted to stick it out on 60mg for a couple more weeks but it's gotten so bad that i can't tolerate it. so much for nardil being some miracle cure for depression and anxiety i guess. two miserable weeks coming off effexor, then no benefit from the nardil, then i feel like a monster. pretty frustrating.

I have been on nardil for years. I recommend being patient with 60 mg for a while. 45mg is a good maintanence dose for me. If I taper below that, after a period of weeks, I notice the original symtoms appearing.
I then have to go back to 60mg for a while for it to level out and then back to 45mg permanently.
Life is normal at that dose. Below that, it creeps back.
