panic from stimulants - help needed

Posted by alex01 on September 11, 2003, at 23:30:21

two years ago i had a small amount of prescription amphetamine (doc thought i had add) this led to my first panic attack. Problem is that the panic symptom has remained, at first i got big rushes of stimulation plus panic a few times a day in response to nothing, then the peaks levelled off into a constant over-stimulated feeling which is extremely uncomfortable, blanks out any feeling, becomes panic whenever i get into a stressful situation.

It seems to me that I have had a sort of kindling/sensitisation experience where the amphetamine has made something in my head hypersensitive.

I am now on lithium, epillim, beta blockers which holds it downs mostly except when i am in a stressful situation. I have a constant tension in my head, and an overstimulated blank feeling.

Would be very grateful for any advice on this sort of case, and what could be done about it. Have had lots of trouble getting any docs to address it, they dont seem to believe that such a thing could happen.

in hope

Don't let the drs. tell you things like this can't happen. It happened to me with paxil (taken as directed my my md) caused a major panic attack that sent me to the er...lasted intensely for days and has never left me completely ( I have that on the edge of panic, anxiety or agitation that you refer to, ready to fly into full scale panic at the drop of a hat) or you can let them tell you that it can't happen , if they must believe that, and move ahead and find something that works, In a way it doesn't matter what caused your problem, your main goal is to get rid of it or at least make it better. That's what I've made up my mind to do a year and a half after my "life changing" paxil experience I have seen 1 pdoc who sort of believes me and 1 who discount the whole idea that a med. could cause this. I've decided to stick with the one that sort of believes me...although even he thinks I was headed down this road anyway and the paxil just shoved me over the edge more quickly....who knows? I just want to get back to being me. That should be your main goal. Don't let the drs. depress you even more. You know what's going on in your body/mind, trust it. Best to you, Worrier.

Keep on

I've also had doctors who wouldn't work with me to find a problem. Dont make the the problem you, its them!!! Change doctors if you need to, do online research but keep going until you find so help.

I haven't had an experience like that before but have had to give my doctor information it took me hours to find to help him treat me. They're not worth what they make thats for sure ;)

good luck

caffeine when taken with the stimulant medication can over stimulate, causing a panic attack. be careful not to drink coffee, coke and the likes
when on the stimulant.
