I thought I read somewhere that a physician had to have a second DEA number which allowed them to prescribe drugs approved for opiate withdrawal/maintenance therapy... is there any truth to this? What if the drug is being prescribed for a purpose other than opioid addiction?

hi Ame, that's right a gp or pdoc cant prescribe subutex & suboxone but they can prescribe Temgesic. It only comes in 0.2mg sublingual tablets.

Thanks for the feedback... I'm pretty sure Temgesic isn't available in the States though, correct me if I'm wrong. I assume they can't prescribe the parenteral form either (Buprenex)?
For anyone who may be reading this and questioning my loyalty to my beloved Ultram, forget about it, lol. I just have a pretty good online friend who is getting kind of desperate and I'm trying to dig up some info for her. She had a good response to the tramadol too, but only for a few weeks. :-(

hi, not sure about the temgesic, I heard about 6 months ago that it was about to be approved in the US. I believe any doc can prescribe the buprenex & it is squirted under the tongue rather than injected. Someone who used to frequent this board used it that way. Hope it helps your friend if she gets a chance to try it.

That's be great if the Temgesic were approved... I'm not quite sure how her pdoc would react to prescribing a parenteral medication...
I believe that was Elizabeth who used to post about her success with buprenorphine in treating depression. Though, if I recall correctly, she used it intranasally rather than sublingually.
This is the end of the thread.
