I have had fairly severe depression for atleast 4 years now and have tried to battle it completely on my own less any "drugs". Recently my doctor talked me into trying 37.5mg of EFFEXOR XR(once a day). I have been taking this medication for 2 weeks now. My depression hasn't budged one bit. NOTHING HAS CHANGED. Should I continue keeping an open mind about this medication, that hopefully within time it will assist in lifting my depression OR does anyone agree that a person should be able to tell if a medication is right for them within the first couple weeks?????? I am really scared of these medications and also really need to start getting better soon. I feel like I am just standing still and the world around me is just flying by without me. I just want someone/something to please give me my sense of well-being back one day. :(
If anyone can give me positive support to do with their experience with Effexor XR I would really apprecaite it.

P.S. I ment to mention that about 2 years ago, for the first time, I agreed to try out depression medication. My doctor gave my the lowest dose of REMERON. I tried it for about a month and I can honestly say I absolutely LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT. For the first time in years I finally felt like my old, amazing, full of energy, happy self again(no insecurities or worries) ....BUT, the weight gain, appetite increase was unbearable. I gained about 20 pounds in 4 weeks and then had a heck of a time trying to lose the weight once I stopped taking the REMERON. If anyone has any experience with REMERON and how to combat the weight gain(appetite increase) aspect of it PLEASE PLEASE respond!

In reply to Effexor XR and REMERON...please help, posted by Sarahh on September 2, 2003, at 16:09:27
Firstly, your Effexor dosage is too low too really being doing anything yet. I am dxed with Recurrent Major Depression on the Severe level and I take a minimum of 225 mgs. Effexor XR per day.
Secondly, have you told your Dr. about your positive response to Remeron? Remeron at higher dosages loses its weight gaining side-effects.
I am on 45 mgs. of Remeron per day, along with 20 mgs. of Prozac, 225 mgs. of Effexor, 40 mgs. of Adderall and 3 mgs. of Klonopin. The combo is considered pretty powerful and not used all that often where I live. I have tried a lot of other meds and the only other thing that came close to relieving my depression was high dose Amitriptyline and Neurontin in place of the Effexor and Remeron. And they still can't compete with the combo I have currently.
Seriously consider Remeron again, but at a higher dosage, or in concert with the Effexor.
