I have a question about taking Lexapro and xanax

Posted by Tippy on June 9, 2003, at 22:54:46

Hello to everyone! I am new to this site. I suffer terribly from panic disorder. I am looking for a long time medication to take with little or no side effects. I have been hearing and reading a lot of good things about Lexapro. Right now I am taking xanax, 1 mg. a day sometimes more. I do not want to get addicted to the xanax so I am trying to find a anxiety drug that I can take with little or no side effects. My question is, is it safe to take xanax with the Lexapro as needed until the Lexapro starts working for me?? I have taken paxil, zoloft and Effexor, hated all of them, they gave me so many side effects that I just couldn't handle and they also took to long to take effect. That is why I love the xanax so much, they start working within 20 minutes. If I can take the xanax while I'm taking the Lexapro then I would like to give the Lexapro a try, then once the Lexapro starts to work I can wean off of the xanax and not have to take it anymore. Can anyone help me out with this question that I have? Thanks in advance!

Yes, Xanax and Lexapro can be taken together. In fact, I am on Lexapro and Xanax currently. Many times psychiatrists will prescribe a med like Xanax with an SSRI like Lexapro, Zoloft, Prozac, etc. Then, when the anti-anxiety effects of the SSRI kick in, the doc may decide to wean the person off the Xanax.

In my case, I've always needed a med like Xanax to completely control my anxiety because SSRIs only helped a little. However, I am an unusal case.

Best thing to do is talk to your doc. Be open and honest and prepare your questions ahead of time so you don't forget antyhing.

Good luck!

Jerry

Same here I take both. I can take up to .75mg of Xanax 4 times a day. At this point my psy.doc tells me I must take it 4 times a day, but I can and I did reduce the dose. I now take .5 4 times a day. I take 20mg of Lex in the evening. That dose just went up June 3. I am doing well and I hope he will take me off the Xanax. I this point I wake up with no anxiety which is what I suffer from. Good luck to you!! Tim
