My husband has ADHD and is on Effexor XR

Posted by Shasta Husband on June 8, 2003, at 15:09:36

My husband started the Effexor XR about a week ago along with adderall. He is on 20mg of adderall twice a day and 37.5mg of Effexor Since starting he has been tired, mentaly drained, doesn't talk much and has lost his sexual drive. He is getting very upset about all of these side effects. I think I enjoyed him more off of the medications. The only reason he got on them was because his mom wanted him to. She thought he would be better on them and that he wouldn't yell at the kids to much when they get in trouble. Now my kids are lucky if he even spends time with them and so am I. Him being this way is harder for me to be around him then when he is off. I love him to death and would never leave him not matter what but his attitude and actions are driving me crazy. Do these side affects go away after awhile or do they stay. Thanks to all that can help.

If he didn't want to take the drugs to begin with and it was only because of his mother, maybe he should not be taking Effexor. Maybe he needs anger menagement counciling. Why is he taking Adderal? That's for attention deficit.

He does have attention deficit, with hyper activity that is what ADHD is. I have been trying to get him into stress menagment classes and counciling for his ADHD. I called his mother yesterday and asked her to please back off a bit and let me and him take care of the problem together. Hopefuly a drug free way.

It takes about a month for Effexor to work
and is common to have many sideeffects at first.
They tend to go away or become manageble over time. You really can tell nothing in a week &
have no way of knowing if the side effects will go away unless you can give it some time.

> Hi there,
Just wanted to give a little feedback on the effects of effexor.
i have been taking 225mg for one year.
It is my experience that the initial side effects are a fairly good indicator, as to how a person will react to the drug in the long term, but to a lesser extent.
The sex-drive problem is one that has remained with me, and tiredness, less so.
I have also had hair loss and severe night sweats.

It is not up to me to make any statements, but all I know is that effexor can be a lifesaving drug (literally) and should only be used in that context.
If your husband is not suffering from depression or anxiety, or even ADHD to a point where it impairs his day to day functioning, he really shouldn't be taking psychotropic medications.

i hope that the councelling avenue is fully explored and that you can get your lives back on track.
Sincere best wishes.
Tay
