Weight gain meds...

Posted by daizy on April 22, 2003, at 16:23:42

I have been on a diet for two weeks and not had any significant weight loss, Im wondering if this is because of AD's? I have really stuck at it, but Im now thinking Im never going to shift it! Has anyone got any suggestions? Are any suppliments to help stop cravings, or help weight loss?

Hi daizy:

I wish I had an answer for you or suggestions to help you with your frustration not being able to lose weight. The only thing I can do is share my experience with you and to tell you I will be watching this thread very closely for ideas.

Over a year ago I took Remeron. I turned into an eating machine. I was stuffing food in, especially sweets, like a maniac. I had to get off the medication, which is unfortunate because I was beginning to get a response. I gained 50 lbs and nothing I have done to lose the weight has budged, even a pound. This summer I adhered to nutritious eating and walked every day, sometimes twice, along the boardwalk I live by, faithfully. I would walk from one end to the other and back up a steep hill to get home. Never mind not losing weight, sometimes I would go to my doctor and I would have gained a few pounds. I have starved myself, tried Slim Fast, and various other diets.

I know I don't sound very encouraging but no matter who I have asked I can't get an answer. I just feel that I am stuck with this weight because I do not know what else to do.

Let's hope that someone will have some suggestions for you.

Good luck!

maryhelen,

Daizy:

My problem is that since I stopped taking the Remeron I no longer have the cravings but I have never lost the 50 lbs. I gained while taking it.
I have never heard of chromium. If you don't mind do you have any more information on it. It seems to me like my metabolism is stuck somehow and I can't lose the weight no matter what I do.

Thanks,

maryhelen

Yeah Im not sure about that, must be hard? Ive only been trying for a while so I hope it doesnt happen the same too. I dont know about Chromium, I just heard someone talk about it once? You might want to ask someone here who knows about suppliments and stuff........ LarryH and RonHill I think are the ones who seem to know the most about these things?

I always take chromium supplements when I'm dieting, and I've tried my best to be objective about judging whether or not they work. I feel they actually do decrease carbo-craving a great deal, but YMMV. Just be sure to use chromium polynicotinate, not the more common chromium picolinate. I'd also suggest checking your daily multivitamin, if you take one, to see if it contains chromium picolinate. It's not the chromium that's the bad guy, it's the picolinate--there have been studies that show it has an adverse effect on your DNA, and that's certainly not something I'd mess with. I've had several pharmacists warn me about this, and so I've researched it a bit and found what they said to be true. So now I always make sure none of my supplements contain anything in the picolinate form.

Supplementing with magnesium glycinate eliminated my usual food/carb/sugar cravings. I went off Zoloft & Provigil the following day, changed my diet considerably to no sugar, no caffeine, no aspartame, no dairy, no glutamates, and no grains by the end of the week -- painlessly. I am taking numerous other supplements including GTF chromium and I have lost 45 pounds in 9 weeks. This has been the easiest weight loss I've ever had. I think the "no grains" is important to reduce those carb cravings. Ever been to Dr. Joseph Mercola's site? He's got a new book out, "The No Grain Diet" but there's also lots of info on his website. http://www.mercola.com/

I found the book "The Cortisol Connection: Why Stress Makes You Fat and Ruins Your Health - And What You Can Do About It"
to be helpful in explaining depression and how it relates to weight gain, stress and cortisol. It was somewhat deficient in getting into female-specific concerns, however.

I've just been reading about natural progesterone and am trying it -- only two days now. I read (can't remember where now) that one thing it does is raise one's body temp (mine is always low) equal to burning 300 calories a day. It also helps the thyroid work properly.

This is the end of the thread.
