Can you have PTSD w/o a traumatic life event?

Does that make sense? I'm just wondering....?

I don't know Jerry, depends upon one's definition of trauma. How one reacts to life situations is very individual. I've suffered from severe PTSD, have been in treatment a long time. What kinds of things are going on?

The DSM definition requires that specific cause unlike most of the diagnoses you see here. No trauma, no PTSD. But I think you can see all the same symptoms in other cases. Every so often I find myself looking over the definition and matching just about everything but the cause. I think in the end, when they identify just what physical changes are caused by an intense short term trauma, they will find that the changes are almost the same as those in some people exposed to lesser chronic stresses. In the meantime it's probably an area where the expression "treat the symptoms, not the diagnosis" makes a lot of sense. If you have a lot of the symptoms of PTSD you may respond to the same treatments.

I've been thinking about how to reply to this.....

Early childhood events can cause permanent changes in stress-reactivity, even in the absence of identifiable single traumatic incidents. The pattern of the experiences can add up to trauma. Later in life, exposure to trauma can trigger massive PTSD reactions, but "the pump was primed" many years before. That's my experience.
