Just wondering. My daughter has been on MANY different AD's - Prozac, Wellbutrin, Elavil, Paxil, Zoloft, etc. Also went with lithium augmentation for a while. She's been on Risperdal and Seroquel. Currently she's on Geodon and Prozac.
While some have worked for a limited amount of time (never longer than 2-3 months) others haven't helped at all and caused huge side effects. The Geodon has helped with psychosis and initially helped with the depression. She's been on meds for almost 3 years and getting very discouraged.
She's not psychotic now thankfully but the depression is devastating again. Lethargy, either insomnia or 13+ hours plus a nap, no ambition, social anxiety, etc.
Just wondering why those of you on a MAOI changed from an AD? Thanks..........

> Just wondering why those of you on a MAOI changed from an AD? Thanks..........She sounds like a prime candidate for an MAOI. I also tried many others with unsatisfactory results and/or intolerable side effects. Nardil is the only thing that really helped with depression and anxiety along with improved mental focus and motivation without being over stimulating or sedating, at least that has been my experience.

> Just wondering why those of you on a MAOI changed from an AD? Thanks..........I agree with these guy's, I use to hate doing pretty much everything involving going outside my apartment because of the anxiety which caused my depression. Nardil has turned me more happier and positive about myself. The depression is nearly gone and the anxiety is pretty controlled. I know longer think getting a girlfriend is impossible for me :) and I can talk and answer questions without sweating and my heart beating through my chest..
Good luck
Nick

I have taken every SSRI, wellbutrin, trazadone, effexor, every combo/agumentation both conventional and non-conventional (Prozac with Effexor), various mood stabilizers...
Nardil cured my major depression/social anxiety.
Parnate has worked just as well.

Thanks for the responses. Sounds like an MAOI might work for her. She sees her pdoc again in a week.
So, how long will she have to be off Prozac if she is prescribed an MAOI? Will she have to quit the Geodon too? While the Prozac doesn't seem to be working at all, it is very scary to think it might be helping a little and she could sink farther waiting to take an MAOI. And to think of stopping the Geodon is terrifying.
Thanks again.

Unfortunately since taking Prozac with Nardil can sometimes be fatal, you have to wait atleast 5 weeks or more depending on what your doc say's..
You can search online for more information on this. I remember reading up on it from Yahoo Health.
I don't know about your other questions.. You can try a search for Geodon and MAOi's...
Good luck,
Nick

glad to hear you are doing so well...
I began Parnate the second I heard about the possible discontinuation of Nardil (I think it was the last week of November)
I began my first dose of Parnate about 12(?) HOURS after my last dose of Nardil (30mg--half of what I normally took...cause that was all I had at the time)
I have never had problems with the MAOIs, I have never had a hypertensive reaction, and I have never changed my diet...
I began to research hypertensive reactions, and thought my lack of a response to pressor amines/and other pressors was due to the beta-blocker Inderal I was taking daily (primarily for a tremmor)...In a strange twist, my tremor stopped AFTER I began Parnate, and I discontinued the inderal...even more strange is that I now realize that the beta blocker probably had very little to do with "protection" against a hypertensive crisis, since I have yet to have any type of reaction (Im NOT on a maoi diet, I have even taken pseudofed, and nasal sprays)
I liken hypertensive episodes to serotonin syndrome...like serotonin syndrome, hypertensive episodes are rare, and if they do occur, they are typically mild.
*most people who have a hypertensive episode have a pre-existing history of hypertension
*some hypertensive episodes are due to other diseases that cause hypertension like renovascular disease, renal parenchymal disease, and pheochromocytoma. Also, more people have hypertensive reactions to cocaine and amphetamines, withdraw from antihypertensive drugs, and collagen vascular diseases than do MAOIs

>Djmmm my friend,
Do you think 120mg is safe? I will post anew thread for this, but from your other post you know your psychopharmacology.
Thanks,
Ace.

120mg is high...I can't tell you if this is a dangerous dose, however, Phenelzine is a dangerous drug when it come to taking more than is typically recomended.
Phenelzine ( a hydrazine derivative) is carcinogenic, and you increase the risk of liver (angiosarcoma) and lung specific cancer as you increase the dose.
At that dose, I would monitor your liver function, simply because most (upwards of 80%) of monoamine oxidase is inhibited typically at the 60-90mg dose range (depending on your weight) and any dose over that does not contribute to MAO activity...You may be one of the few people where the degree of MAO inhibition doesn't necessarily correlate with theraputic response....
also, there may be some bioequivalence issues with Link Pharm..I posted a link in a reply to one of your more recent posts...
in any event, Im glad you are doing well...I know the profound difference Nardil has made in my life
