Hi. I was wondering if anyone else believes there are different sub types of social anxiety that have yet to be identified. Some may be helped by this, others by this... Some are more responsive to meds, others therapy. (Some completly one or the other) Comorbitity with other issues may help indicate what is going on in that mind. Anyway, I will definitly post more if anyone has any interest in this topic. Tom

There are various types. SOme are fearful of being evaluated in social situations, some are terrified of public speaking, some are terrified of going to public restrooms, etc. I am so terrified of public speaking, that I once tried to commit suicide as a freshman in HS becasue I was afradi of giving a speech. I dropped out of college because I als had a pretty severv Avoicant personality disorder and was terified of being called in class. My speeling sux and I am in no mood to correctit. sorry.

Definitely think there are different types of social anxiety. Some people fear dances and parties, but are just fine at a job interview or giving a speech. For others, its quite the opposite. Some people are only uncomfortable in groups. Others are only uncomfortable one on one. Extreme social phobics might fear every type of social interaction. The degree to which every social phobic feels the fear differs too, from mild to moderate to extremely intense anxiety.
I am a social phobic, and I tend to fear groups over one on one interactions and personal over impersonal situations. I also have extreme pessimism/self-deprecation that accompanies any anxiety I experience socially.

Yes, some types of social phobia are actually part of a personality disorder. These may not respond to treatments which are effective for
"uncomplicated" social anxiety.

Tom -
I think the comorbidities are crucial - need to know all of them and relative weight - primary vs secondary if possible etc.
Write me if you would like.
