Adrafinil: Revisited

Posted by ShelliR on December 8, 2002, at 18:50:32

Hi Iso, Denise, and all,

I've been going through the archives on adrafinil and haven't seen anything written since last summer when Iso was so happy that she received her mail order of adrafinil that she was dancing around with a broken rib.

Just wanted to follow up. I tried both provigal and adrafinil almost two years ago. Provigal kept me asleep for three weeks straight. I liked adrafinil, it had a nice smooth feel to it, but it created a small hypertensive reaction when I combined it with nardil. Since my pdoc had been so against the combination in the first place, I discontinued the adrafinal (not willing yet to give up nardil).

But now, I'm off nardil and thinking about ordering some and starting again, for both depression and sleepiness. I was wondering whether anyone has stayed on it for three months or more, and whether anyone has had positive effects from it for their depression and/or fatigue.

For long term use, has anyone gotten a baseline liver test, which was recommended? If yes, a followup?

Any updates would be appreciated. Thanks.

Shelli

visiting adrafinil and staying with modafinil... » ShelliR

Shelli, I probably would still be using adrafinil if modafinil (Provigil in the States, Alertec here in Canada) wasn't available. Because I had to pay for adrafinil from overseas but I can get modafinil covered by my insurance, I chose the cheaper option for me.

I originally tried adrafinil for my narcolepsy. Because it also works as an AD, I initially felt a gentle euphoria. I think my brightened mood brought a temporary increase in my PEA levels which increases dopamine & therefore kept me awake & alert. Sadly, after a couple of months, when PEA levels returned to normal, so did the sleepiness. Even when I increased the adrafinil to the maximum dosage (& later did so with modafinil), I felt no more awake than I did before.

Because I thought that modafinil (at this point I'd stopped adrafinil) was no longer having any effect, I quit it. Total time of being on both adrafinil & modafinil was close to 7 months. But after a few weeks, I realised that it had been doing a lot. Maybe it was a lousy anti-narcoleptic agent (for me) but it sure did help as an AD - pretty darn good really! And I still think it helps my focus (either that or my memory - for me, the two are entwined).

I can't say I noticed any diff between modafinil or adrafinil. I never did have liver tests. Maybe I know I should but my system is surprisingly resilient. When liver problems start, there are symptoms & I've had nothing show at all. I'll get a liver test done yet when I talk to my doctor next. I tend to have low/normal blood pressure too & I don't think anything could raise mine - even if I ate a whole salt block. Fatigue isn't a problem with me - just constant sleepiness. I'd sooner give up my SSRI (Celexa) than stop modafinil. I like it that much.

Hi Iso,

Thanks for the info. My understanding is that a liver test is only recommended for adrafinil; haven't read anything, nor was it recommended for me when I was on modafinil (provigil).

Take care,

Shelli

I just came across this post, so I don't know if you're still interested in this... I don't have a lot to say personally, but I thought johnL used adrafinil for quite a while... maybe he'll see this & put his 2 cents in...?

I only tried modafinil for a few days - didn't do much for me. I had prevously tried adrafinil for a while - found it to be helpful (I think) but subtle. Haven't used it for a while - using dex now - & never did the liver tests... Sorry I don't have more to say.
