It depends on the severity of the hypomanic or manic *episode* you are trying to treat. If it is a full blown mania, it isn't uncommon to work up to 1500mg/day fairly quickly (over a few days). If it is a hypomanic episode I've found that 500mg/day works fine to quash it. I have never needed more than 250mg/day as a general maintenance dose (for BP-II).

I currently take only 125 mg. at night. It does help calm me down and I sleep very well on it. I used to take 500 mg. and felt like a zombie, no feelings, no interesting thoughts, total flat effect.
I am in the process of charting my moods to see if 125 is going to do it, but it could be that I might need 250 mg.
BTW, no weight gain (loss actually) and the nausea is almost gone.

I'm taking just 125mg now. I have been instructed to take 250mg when I get into the hypomanic part of my cycle (which isn't going to happen until just after Thanksgiivng ):). I've not experienced weight gain at the 125mg or 250mg level, I definitely got it at 500mg/day though.
