My husband went to the doctor and he came back with lexapro. He told me that they diagnosed him with OCD. Is this the correct medication for OCD? I take Lexapro for Major Depression.

My doctor tells me that despite advertising strategies, any of the SSRI's will treat OCD. He also told me that usually it requires a higher dosage--(I wasn't getting relief from OCD at 10mgs Lexapro, I'm not sure it's working for me at all, however.) So to anwer your question, Lexapro is as good as any place for your husband to start. For awhile Luvox was being hailed as the OCD med of choice.

SSRIs like Lexapro are the treatment of choice for OCD.However you may get significant relief from adding omega-3 fish oil.20% of the human brain is omega-3 fatty acids and a deficiency seems to cause a great deal of psychiatric illness.Try 5-10 g daily of omega-3 -that is the total of EPA and DHA.Most people get results in a few days.

Kelli, I have been prescribed Lexapro for OCD and I think it works very well. In the past I have been prescribed other SSRI's and so far this one feels the "cleanist" of them all. Meow Mary is right in saying that usually patients with OCD require higher doses. I use to take 100 mg of Celexa for about a year but I stopped because of some drowsiness it caused me. However, right now I am taking 40 mg of Lexapro and feel really good. Hopefully I will not need to go any higher but only time will tell. My doctor says that he has patients at doses higher than 40 and they are doing great. Well, good luck and I hope the medicine works out for him.
