Kava So relaxed, you'll forget you had a liver :)

Posted by utopizen on October 26, 2002, at 18:37:55

So I remembered some Kava kava I had in my pill drawer, which I must pat myself on the back for cleaning out so well last weekend (it use to look like a pharmacy hit by a robbery).

So it's CVS Premo brand. Um, I got it a year ago before the Kava scare, which I heard caused even GNC to not sell it. But CVS might still bother selling it, although I doubt it still goes for $16 for 60 pills. 1-2 is suggested/day.

So naturally, I took 15. I have prior experience with Kava, so don't do this at first.

Anyway, it's 30% concentration guarantee a pill. Um, Kava's cute. I never thought of it as something in a daily regimen, more something to relax alone with while on the net every few months... I haven't taken this stuff for a year.

I took Kava Kava with great success for two years. I had constant diarreah though and eventually got very fatigued. It is not recommended that you take it for more than 3 months at a time. My skin was yellow at one point, indications of liver problems. I used Kava X powder, which was the most potent and least expensive form. I took 1/4 tsp. (750 mg of 30% kavalactones) twice a day, yielding about 450 mg of kavalactones per day.

Roman,

There's many books that suggest taking Kava as a replacement to benzos. I disagree- I consider it much safer to take a benzo than to take Kava long-term. But these books also tend to mention a lot of info on how to responsibly dose Kava. Well, I noticed the first time I took it I had great effects from 2 capsules, and the second time almost no effect from 15 of the same caps. So a tolerating effect may exist, which would complicate dosing regimens.

Anyway, I have no idea how much is a responsible dose, I suggest going to Amazon and buying a Kava book written by an M.D. It would spend a lot of time on dosing info, which with Kava requires a bit of help.

Me, I take it like once every 4 months... I just like it as a novel herb. I've heard combiing it with Valerian is nifty, but I'm a little cautious about valerian because I know nothing about it.

I had a look on the Amazon site, this one seems most comprehensive from its description; I'll pick it up ASAP.

"Kava: The Pacific Elixer: The Definitive Guide to Its Ethnobotany, History, and Chemistry"

If they were able to synthesize the active ingredient thenn we'd have something good.

I tried kava as an alternative to BZDs but found it didn't have any noticable effects for me. It wasn't that the brand was unreliable - others were affected but even at an increased dose, I noticed nothing. Myabe a little more sleepy, but I fall asleep too easily.

As for combining it with valerian, I suppose it would depend on your reaction to valerian. Something like 10%-15% of the population react in an opposite manner to it than most. It gives me a unpleasant, jittery feeling & I was unable to sleep after trying it. But then I can take Dexedrine or caffeine (No-Doz or Wake-Up) pills & sleep straight through it all. Others with ADD have often found that stims can help them sleep better - quiets the mind.
