Hi,
This is to anyone who has tried both Paxil and Effexor. Could you compare these two meds for depression and anxiety? What was your experience? Which had more of an impact on your sexual functioning?
Thanks,
Jon

I have to completely agree with jyl with Paxil. It just made me more stoned day by day till it was almost impossible to get off the couch. Effexor works great except I have incredible ups and downs, but then again I'm Bi-Polar II so I really should be adding a Mood Stabilizer to the mix. I don't have any trouble with the "sex" thing on Effexor though. But on Paxil... Oh Man!!!I've heard that Paxil works wonders for girls for anxiety and Effexor works wonders for guys for anxiety.

Hi Jon. I have been on both and both seemed to be equally effective for anxiety, with Effexor XR more effective for depression.
Paxil had a severe effect on sex life. Could start but never finish the act!! Effexor still had some effect but not as much and has diminished slightly over the five weeks I have been on it.
I eventually stopped Paxil as it was causing depression due to what it did to my sex life. Paxil had less side effects though. Serzone actually improved my sex life but was not that effective for depression and caused me short-term memory problems.
Best of luck!!

> I've heard that Paxil works wonders for girls for anxiety and Effexor works wonders for guys for anxiety.Do you know of any studies that show this or is this anecdotal. I'm not trying to diss anecdotal evidence, it's often as good or better than the drug company funded studies.
I'm curious because I've been going through a rough patch in which I've been mildly depressed and moderately agoraphobic. I'm not stuck in the house precisely, but I have to push myself to go to the corner store for cigarettes, and positively heave myself to make the one hour drive to my psychiatrist. When I'm away from home, I don't exactly have panic attacks, I just feel like I might. Not a comfortable sensation.
My psychiatrist mentioned swapping out my remeron for an SSRI or Effexor as a possible treatment. I've already had a trial of paxil that in the long run just made me nervous. BTW I'm already taking 1mg klonopin and 4mg xanax a day. I believe these to be keeping the lid on what would be a much more uncomfortable episode. I suppose I could up the dosage of K and X to 2 and 6mg each. I've been on doses that high in the past. (No problems discontinuing). I'd rather leave that option as a last resort though.
There is a good deal of literature about the treatment of SP, GAD, PD, but not much about agoraphobia as such, only as an symptom of PD. Can anyone recommend a drug or combo that works well for agoraphobia without PD?

The Paxil worked great for my anxiety and depression. I got off of it because of the sexual side effects of delayed ejaculation. I took it for three months. I eventally got on Effexor XR and that did not work as well for anxiety, eventually I got off of Effexor too due to anorgasmia, but I was taking Wellbutrin with it. I have no way of knowing if the side effects were due to the long term effect of being on ADs or the individual drug. You may know this already but the (Seretonin) 5HT2 receptor site has libido controlling effects. Seretonin increasing drugs all effect the libido, except perhaps for Remeron which I have not taken.

Hi, Brittpark.
I suppose that you also have a panic disorder. What you can do regarding agoraphobia, is adding Celexa to Effexor. I have seen this in some cases in my work at hospital. If you have luck, you only need 10-20 mg of celexa, and the sexual side effect is not as serve that Paxil use to be.
Many psychiatrist never use Paxil, because it is serve to combo with other p-meds. It also seems to develop serve symptom, when you finish the treatment.
Sorry for bad english. I´m not from U.S
Sincerely....// Petter
