Lamictal: Weakness--Exercise

Posted by TomG on October 8, 2002, at 15:17:46

Was on Lam 150 for six weeks before doc moved to 200. Depression/anxiety seemed to get worse within a day of taking 200. I run 4 miles a day usually about thirty minutes. The day after I took 200 I could barely make 15 minutes of running. I dropped back to 175 and have been there for a week. The worsening of depression/anxiety got better, but I feel terribly weak and its all I can do to even think about running. I currently have had no response to Lam positive or negative. The doctor keeps me at these dosages for five to six weeks before going up while I've read most of you are going up every two weeks. Have any of you had this problem?

Tom

Have been in the same boat. I'm on 175 mg and don't feel any motivation to exercise. I have a running partner though and he drags me out the door. Once I get out there and get my adrenaline pumping I'm ok though. In other words, I don't think the lamictal is physically inhibiting me (although I might get a little more dehydrated easily), but more or less it's more of a mental lack of motivation.

On the other hand, I had just as much of a motivation problem off meds since the depression got in the way.

Try tactics like meditation and visualization tactics before you exercise. Try doing it in the morning as well. I feel a lot more energy in the morning than I do with other meds (for instance, the SSRIs made me exhausted in the morning and so I could only exercise in the afternoon). For me, other ways to psych myself up has been music. I run with a walkman and before I go out running I spend a little time meditating, stretching, and listening to some good music. After about five minutes I feel like Rocky and am ready to bust out the door. For me it's just about getting my adrenaline ready and then I'm good to go.

good luck.
