Inositol for SSRI insommnia

Posted by linkadge on September 6, 2002, at 7:40:14

I was wondering if someone else could
confirm my findings.

I started taking inositol 250 mg
three times daily, and have slowly (after 3 weeks)
been getting a better sleep each
night. I take Celexa which is the
main culprit. Can anyone confirm this.
Inositol is supposed to increace Dopamine
receptor density.

Inositol is a lipotropic and a member of the B-Complex family. Its main function is to help to produce lecithin (which metabolizes fats and cholesterol) and to help prevent the excessive accumulation of fat in the liver. It - apparently - is "brain nurishing" like choline. From what I am reading in "The Vitamin Bible," Dr. Atkins (of the "Atkins Diet") recommends 2,000mg of inositol along with pantothenic acid as a sleep aid. Inositol also has a "calming effect". Heavy coffee, tea and cola drinking can lower inositol levels. And finally, it's recommended to help prevent hair loss.

So far I haven't read anything about any effects on dopamine. Hope this helps....

I've been using it constantly with strict
skepticism. It seems to make the sleep
deeper and I am experiencing fewer nightmares
(the celexa causes this at times)

It's funny I just went out and bought some inositol because of something I read on a web site posted by ActionJackson. It said that in clinical studies after 4 weeks of high doses of Inositol (2 grams daily) decreased the symptoms of depression.

For the last year I've been tinkering with
various supplements to see what best augments
Celexa. These are my findings.

Be Careful With TMG and/or SAMe

After taking a fairly large dose of TMG
B12 and Folic Acid (Precursors to SAMe)
I had some strange experiences. First of all
I started crying again (I am unable to do that
on Celexa). When watching Pretty Woman I just
strarted crying because it was so emotional
It was not sad, it was just so beautiful. I
knew something was very very strange, and that
night I beleive I had Seretonin Syndrome. I
just started freaking out. I had this psychotic
anxiety all of a sudden and my pulse just went
through the roof + (about 150ish) This never
happens when I am on Celexa alone. I quit the
next day and slowly came back to normal. I wouldn't do it again, but yet it was a very
refreshing time.

I currently take,

Celexa,
Folic Acid and B12
Inositol - about a gram
Fish Oil

In general I am doing very well. I just started
university now and considering the circumstances
I am just fine. I find the Inositol deepens my sleep. The folic acid + b12 seems to really attenuate the actions of the Celexa (10 mg)
For a long time I was on 20 mg and constantly
trying to get it down to 10 mg but always failed
and returned about a week later. After adding the
F + b12 I was able to adjust to the change pretty quickly, and now only need 10 mg

The studies I've read state that up to 18 grams daily are needed to alleviate depression, panic and or OCD symptoms. There was only one study done in Israel, at Ben Gurion Hospital.
