Well I've been on Neurontin almost a week but because I am sensitive to drug side-effects I am being put on a schedule of 100mg at night adding 100 mg each week untill I reach 300mg. I must say that I have experienced very positive effects, I am more calm, and have less overall axiety, I finally look forward to things. However when I initially take it at night I experience sleepiness I have had a drop in labido.By the next day I'm feeling good and less sleepy especially with a little coffee but by the afternoon I'm a bit restless again. It seems like I will really be dragging when I get to 300 mg or does this go away. to summarize, sleepy, drop in labido, oh and totally retaining water, but content. Oh and I've dropped all other meds

I noticed that you do build tolerance to the sedative effect. If you stopped your other meds it may be difficult to tell if it is the Neurontin or a withdrawal of the others, however.

But does the good effect stay around, Its just I sleep so much bed by 10:30 and its hard to wake up, I'm supposed to start tommorow on two a day but I don't know when to take the second so that I"m not dragging. Do you also know if people gain weight on this?

Hi Noell,
I hope the Neurontin works well for you. Here's a site with a lot of information on it:
http://web.tampabay.rr.com/lymecfs/nfaq.htmI was given Neurontin to start on last week but I am worried about the water retention side effect. I need to check with my pdoc first. I was told to drink lots of water and eating a little protein with each dosage will help with the side effects.
I hope you post back and let us know how it is working for you.

As far as "the good effect" goes, that is a little subjective :) If you are taking a 300mg capsule twice daily, the easiest thing to do is take one at bedtime, and then take one approx. 12 hrs. later (midday, i.e.). Set your alarm! Just how many hours is it making you sleep anyhow? Are you taking any other meds with it? I never noticed any weight gain or loss from taking it, BTW.

Hasn't affected my weight at all. The drowsiness passed, but I still sleep better. That nice floaty feeling didn't last, though.

Hi Hattree,
Are you still on Lamictal and Dex? Do you notice any interactions b/w them and neurontin?
I read somewhere that Neurontin shouldn't be taken with Magnesium? Have you heard that?

Thanks,
I am eating a really careful diet and exercising because I was on a stimulant before, normally I would be losing weight but I'm not. The water retention is annoying but its not bad, I will try drinking more water
Thanks

Mitch,
To answer you're question, By "The good effect" I mean relieving anxiety and depression. No I'm not taking any other meds, but I was taking a the stimulant Adderal. I was given the MMPI and it came up with High levels of anxiety and depression, and for some reason the psychologist felt very strongly about Neurontin. Seems he is right, and you are right the flatness and sedation is decreasing but tommorow is the beginning of week 2, twice a day so we'll see
Thanks again
Noelle

I took Neurontin, starting at 300 mg/day. When I finally got off of it, I was taking as much as 3600 mg/day and it wasn't making me sleepy, so I can definitely tell you that it didn't have an effect on me in terms of sleepiness. I do know, however, that it knocks some people right out. However, the improvement was limited when I increased from 2400 to 3600... I would say, also, that once you build a tolerance to it, taking more would not affect your sleepiness (if you need to take more) This was, at least, my experience.
BEWARE when getting off of Neurontin. Don't run out. You will feel irritated and get a bad headache. Be sure to taper off of your dosage. I ran out one weekend and had a headache and felt overly emotional and easily agitated.
Good luck!

The neurontin helps take the edge off the Dex. Hadn't heard about Magnesium.
