I sent out a post recently, describing the horrors of Paxil withdrawal that I am going through. I neglected to add that I am currently taking Neurontin as prescribed by my pdoc, for partial seizures that were increased in frequency while on Paxil. Anybody know if Neurontin, and at what dose, will counteract any of the withdrawal symptoms from Paxil?

I believe someone (Kate?) has already suggested getting on Prozac to withdraw from Paxil. Prozac has a much longer half life and doesn't create withdrawal symptoms. If you absolutely refuse to do that, Wellbutrin sometimes helps.

I am through with SSRI's. I have epilepsy and was wondering if the medication I am on now will help ease the withdrawal symptoms of Paxil. I also understand that Neurontin has anti-anxiety effects, which is why I started on Paxil in the first place. Any input??

I was just prescribed Neurontin to get off Klonopin (benzo). Plus I was trying to withdraw from Paxil, but the psych. wants me off the Klonopin first. I found a website that has LOTS of information about Neurontin on it. I have posted here for help, but didn't get any response.
Good luck:

Hello..
Don't know if this would be of help ..
I have taken effexor for 3/4 years..everytime I've reduced dose I get the horrid withdrawal.
I am currently on 900mg Neurontin..and started to decrease my effexor dose from 225-150 , I think 4/5 days ago..I am hardly experiencing any of the usual withdrawal symptoms (especially the head whoosing sensations/unsteadiness)--well not yet anyway : )

Hi,
I remember one gal at the RxList Effexor board that was having a terrible withdrawal period from Effexor. She was experiencing what she called "brain zaps", i.e. flashes of light, aura-type seizures. Her doctor prescribed Neurontin which did not help.
You might consider the amino acid supplement Taurine. Taurine has been used for epilepsy as well as seizures. Also, it would be a good idea to take Brewer's yeast or Nutritional yeast as yeast is rich in many basic nutrients, such as the B vitamins (except for B12), sixteen amino acids, and at least fourteen different minerals. Take calcium citrate at bedtime - can be taken on an empty stomach. Important in normal nerve impulse transmission. Also helpful - magnesium - 700mg a day in divided doses. Take between meals, on an empty stomach, with apple cider vinegar or betaine HCI.
