Reboxetine -- Anyone?

Posted by BekkaH on July 13, 2002, at 0:23:44

I'd like to hear from anyone who has tried Reboxetine (Edronax, Vestra, etc.). I'm interested in your experiences, both good and bad.

After reading up on Reboxetine, I thought I found the answer. Ordered some 2 years ago, lasted 2 days on it.
Started at 1/2 the recommended dosage and felt like my heart was going to explode. From what I have read here, a wild guess would be that 80% of those who have tried it dropped it.
But, you know, could be the best drug in the world for you. I would recommend starting very low on the dosage and with your pdocs blessing.

Thanks for the information. I'm sorry it didn't work out for you. Do you have any idea why the FDA won't approve it here?

I actually called the FDA trying to find a release date and the guy that answered the phone said,"These anti-depressants don't work much better than placebo." I don't know what his job was there.
I think it was politics or flawed testing which ends up costing companies so much money to go thru the procedure again. I think it and Adrafinil ought to be available here but what do you do?

Hmmm. . .Very interesting. I logged onto the Pharmacia website. That's the company that makes Reboxetine. After typing "Reboxetine" into the search bar of their site, I came up with only two links, one of which said that Pharmacia had received a letter of NON-approval from the FDA, but the website offered no elaboration or explanation of the NON-approval.

Another PB member suggested that Lilly is trying to market a competitor of Reboxetine and was able to prevent the FDA from approving the potential competition. That's a possibility, but I don't know whether Lilly has that much more clout with the FDA than any other pharmaceutical company.

Oh well, thanks for your help.

Pfizer will buy Pharmacia

On the front page of Monday's NEW YORK TIMES, there was an article about Pfizer buying out Pharmacia. Hmmm. . . Maybe if Pfizer goes through with this, Reboxetine will eventually be approved in this country. Pfizer is a very rich, very powerful company. They can probably afford to run all those extra clinical trials that the FDA demands. I think that Pharmacia didn't want to run any more Reboxetine clinical trials for the FDA. They already market Reboxetine in 18 other countries, and they probably figured it wasn't worth their while to be put through yet another hurdle, with no guarantee that the FDA would approve it.

Hi,

I had bad experience on it. Couldn't sleep at all and depression worsening.
It's funny because normally I tolarate very well the AD working on NE.

I used it for only 3 days because I experienced the urinary retention side effect, which is often reported by users. Aside from that, I liked its effects. I could literally feel an "adrenaline rush" in the back of my head, above my neck. That part of my head usually feels empty (although Remeron increases activity there a little bit), so the feeling of increased activity really allowed me to expand my cognitive abilities.

For me, Reboxetine was more effective than Paxil and Prozac, both which felt like placebo except for their adverse effects. I think this was the case because I usually don't respond to serotonin increasing med's.

The other day I was looking at some mainstream news site for something else when I glanced at an article which was about a "new" ADD/ADHD med that is expected to be used in the US in the near future. It was Atomoxetine (sp?). Something to that effect. I have not read anything noting that Reboxetine will be available in the US anytime in the near future.

Hi GGG. There is a medicine called Urecholine or Bethanechol, which is used to counteract anticholinergic effects like urinary retention, etc. I have used it, and I think it is quite effective and it has very few adverse effects. According to the psychopharmacologist, Stephen Stahl, the urinary retention experienced on Reboxetine is a "pseudo-anti-cholinergic" effect. It is real, but it isn't caused directly by anti-cholinergic effects. Of course, the end result is just as disturbing regardless! If you want to continue on Reboxetine, perhaps your pdoc could prescribe some Urecholine/Bethanechol for you.
