Hi. I just started effexor (not XR) yesterday- dr. days must take twice a day. Does anyone out there take this only ONCE/day? If so, is it as effective?
I appreciate to hear if anyone does this.
Thanks,
Hildi

Effexor's half-life is too short for once a day dosing. The drug won't stay in your system consistently. You really need the XR for once a day dosing.

I too was taking the tablet form of Effexor (i.e. NOT the ER kind) and I only took it once a day...and it worked fine for me! I had to be REALY GOOD about taking it at the same time every day (kind of like the birth control pill..) or else I would start getting a headache, but it was rarely problematic...
I was taking 400 mg a day...and I took it around 1 pm ...if I took it any later in the day I had insomnia. If I took it in the morning it made me tired (go figure??!)...thus I found that the only time I could take it without weird effects was around lunchtime, thus the once a day dosing....my doctor said if that's what worked for me than that was fine...
Good luck!

I'm not a huge fan of trying to shoot for insane dosages of Effexor. I think taking less than 100mg/day is a wise idea. If Effexor alone doesn't cut it, combine a low dose of Effexor with a low dose of Remeron. Low dosages almost always translate into lower incidence of side effects. I recall reading that there is no such thing as a dangerous drug, only a dangerous dosage (or something to that effect). I can speak from experience in saying that having too much noradrenaline (norepinephrine) swimming around in your brain is not fun at all. It has a lot in common with mania. Taking non XR Effexor twice daily is a smart idea. I really dislike the idea of taking more than 300mg/day of Effexor; that just bothers me.
