Lithium augmentation to SSRI?

Posted by adamie on June 5, 2002, at 17:58:27

hi. i seen my new doctor. and she seems actually quite informed and the best doctor i think i had yet compared to those goons back at the hospital who hardly knew anything except information regarding just a few select medications. well there's our canadian health care system for you. but anyway she is a good doctor i think from what i can tell in my first visit. she said i was treatment resistant. this was something other doctors couldn't believe. no no no i just had to respond to all the meds they gave me! some of them treated me as some kind of liar.

anyway she suggested i stay on paxil 20mg along with the ativan. but later on she plans to augment it with lithium and also increase to 40mg if no response is had (if i get a response it will be a miracle).

can you guys tell me how this combo helps? how does lithium help the paxil (ssri's)? what happens? please give me info and experiences.

i have never tried lithium yet.

Hi adamie,

I'm not sure how lithium augmentation works, but when I was younger it definitely gave my response to prozac a kick! Ironically, later in life my lithium response has been very negative.

I'm very happy to hear you finally found a good doctor, isn't it so refreshing to finally be working with someone knowledgeable?

Jon

Hi Adamie,
I too was nonresponsive (for years)to various antidepressants. After 7 doctors and several hospitalizations, a doctor decided to give me lithium in combo with Celexa and Nortriptyline. It works--I don't question it. Mimi

The most productive and anxiety-free period I ever had was a combination of low-dose Prozac and Lithium. It is just they both cause such severe diarrhea that I can't take them anymore. Paxil isn't as harsh on your guts as Prozac can be. I never tried that combo-but it seems like based on other's posts it might be a good combination.

good luck,

Mitch
