Can depression/anxiety cause physical pain?

Posted by Automated Lady on May 9, 2002, at 12:16:25

This is something I'd never heard of before. But I've been going through a period of anxiety (after being too depressed to care about anything for a while) and I've started getting all these stabbing pains in my back, neck and shoulders. Could it just be stress? Has anyone else had this happen?

Yes it's possible.
Whenever I'm stressed or anxious for some reason, I get back pain. It's quite common actually, that's why so many people get massages, go to different types of healers for back pain.

Also, if the anxiety leads to panick attachs, then you can get all sorts of physical symptoms such as chest pain, headache, dizziness, etc.

During major depression, I used to get a frontal lobe type of headache. Very specific - I called it "the depression headache." It was clear something was not working properly in my brain. I'd also get stomach ache.

Our bodies and mind work together - physical illnesses can lead to psuchological or psychiatric ones, and vice versa. Now, if this lasts, get to someone who can help you with the back pain. It could also be a side effect from and AD - I've heard of some people switching ADs because of neck pain.

Yes, as Sid says, I very much think so also. In fact, I feel depression and anxiety are *very* physical, and it's like the pain seeps into the muscles and the bones. I would say tension is a big part of this (which is a part of dep/anxiety), and even something like lack of *good* quality sleep, which is something most of us with mental illness experience (as Sid says, even with certain antidepressants).

If a good physical by the doctor rules out anything else, the physical pain may mean you still need better treatment for your depression and/or anxiety. On top of my regular meds, I find I *must* have regular use of all sorts of pain meds. Hope that helps a bit....I wish I could offer more concrete answers.

Best wishes

Jay
