Hi all - I have a question for you.
I'm considering getting orthodontic braces, but I wonder about possible bleeding and risk of infection. I'll talk to my doc and orthodontist about it too, but if anyone on this boeard has some info or some experience with this, please let me know.
Since I started Effexor XR, I have been bleeding more easily, it takes longer for my blood to coagulate, and I also bruise easily. My doc told me not to take Aspirin but rather Tylenol for headaches and other potential aches because SSRIs and SNRIs (Effexor XR) causes unusual bleeding and bruising.
Now, for this treatment, I need to get one tooth pulled out to make room for others, and then I'll get the braces doe 20 to 24 months. As the teeth move slowly, I suppose there can be some internal bleeding, although I am not sure - waiting for my orthodontist call to ask him more details on this. I spoke to my dentist, and for the tooth extraction, she said she'll put one stitch and make sure to close the opening as much as she can before I leave her office; she would not normally put a stitch after such an extraction (premolar). I think that'll be alright, but I still wonder about the braces, potential internal bleeding and risk of infection or facial bruising.
Any insights? Thanks in advance, and have a good day!

I don't want to be a hypochondriac about this... but it's so much money (I've been waiting for 22 years to be able to afford braces !) and it's 2 years of my life, I want to make sure it's OK before I do it.

Hey, congrats on the braces!!! I just got braces a few months ago at age 33 and am having my baby canines removed on Monday. It's exciting to finally be doing something that I've wanted for so long.
Unfortunately, I don't know much about Effexor's effect on coagulation. My knowledge of coagulation disorders is limited to the laboratory tests (I'm a lab tech.) and the transfusions that are required in cases of severe diseases like disseminated intravascular coagulation and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. There are a few tests that you may want to have to assess the extent of your coagulation deficiency. One would be a platelet count and another one would be a PT (prothrombin time) and APTT (activated partial thromboplastin time). The PT and APTT usually done together (you don't do one without the other) are used to tell if you are low on one or more coagulation factors whose job it is to make fibrin, the network of fibers that form a clot. I'm just throwing this out at you. I don't know what doctors actually do in cases like yours, but it makes sense to me that you might want to know the extent of the deficiency so that you would know what your risk is of serious bleeding episodes.

Thanks so much for the info - I definitely will talk to my doc and orthodontist. I had to leave the office early today so I probably missed their calls. Tomorrow I hope to talk to them.
I'm 34 myself - I know the feeling of FINALLY getting something you've wanted for so long. Weird huh? I cannot wait to have them, and I hope the Effexor Xr won't prevent me from getting them ASAP.
Thanks again!

Well, I talked to the othodontist this morning. As it turns out, there is no internal bleeding or bruising when moving the teeth with braces. The only problem I may have is with tooth extraction, but my dentist already said she'd put a stitch to stop the bleeding ASAP.
So, no problem with having braces and taking SSRIs or Effexor XR at the same time.- sid
