Neurontin equals klonopin?

Posted by Jill K. on March 3, 2002, at 2:23:30

My pdoc started my on neurontin for generalized anxiety. I had use klonopin in the past, but developed depression after prolonged use. I am afraid neurontin will do the same.

Don't they both increase the GABA?

I just don't want to feel depressed again like on klonopin. Any advice would be appreciated.

Jill

Neurontin is thought to increase Gaba conductance
but generally has less of a suppressant profile.

I tried same at one time but it was only partially effective. If you are GAD there is always Buspar (generally less effective especially after having used Klon.) or the other BZD's. Perhaps you may already know this but one reacts as differently to the different BZD's as one does to the differing ssri's for instance. What else have you tried? I also did notice a different, deeper, more profound effect on my CNS with Klon. than for instance ativan or xanax, or even valium.

I presently take a small dose of Klon as a maint. dose and augment with a small dose ativan as maint. The combination works quite well....and if I have any breakthrough panic which the klon alone generally doesn't usually cover for me, the Ativan can be upped temporarily PRN.

Jill,

Neurontin has been the best mood stabilizer for my bipolar depression. Neurontin (based on the latest I heard) selectively blocks voltage sensitive calcium ion channels in the hippocampus. The GABA "thing" may not have much to do with how it works on anxiety. I think it would be worth a try. Watch out about the dose, however. Some people can take a ton of it and not seem to get very fatigued or tired, but I couldn't handle more than 300mg 3x daily. Even starting off with that hit me like a ton of bricks. I also take Klonopin with it, and I have to limit my Klonopin dose because it will make me tired and "sullen" (aka depressed), if I take much during the day-esp. if I don't really need to.

good luck,
Mitch
