Blackouts and headaches

Posted by dee on January 20, 2002, at 13:05:33

Ever since I started Effexor (been on for 5 weeks) if I stand up quick or wake up and stand I see all black? Is this normal it usually takes a few seconds to see right again. Plus by late evening I start to have weird headaches, it is like my meds are wearing off? Has this happened to anyone else?

I think what you are describing as happening when you stand up might be something called "postural hypotension" or "orthostatic hypotension". A lot of psychiatric drugs cause this. I forget the physiology behind it, but it is weird because effexor gave me increased blood pressure, but postural low blood pressure. I've got it now on Prozac. For me, its worst if I stand up and then stretch (which is a natural thing to do if you've been sitting too long). I've actually fallen before from this. My experience is that it gets better the longer I've been on the medication.

I don't know what to say about the headaches. Does it feel like a vascular headache or a tension headache (not always easy to differentiate, I guess)? Does it throb? Worse when you bend over?

Do you feel dizzy also? It might be orthostatic hypotension (although that isn't supposed to happen with Effexor, anything's possible). It's not particularly dangerous (except in people who may be at risk for falls or in people who already have very low blood pressure). If it is OH, I think you can expect it to get better after you've been taking the Effexor for a while. That was my experience (I didn't get OH from Effexor, but I did get it from the MAOIs).

Are you taking immediate-release Effexor (tablets) or Effexor XR (capsules)? How much are you taking, and how many times a day?

I am currently on Effexor ER the dosage is 75 mg.
I don't seem to get dizzy, I just have to stop a moment and wait till my vision clears. This has never happened until I started Effexor. As for my headaces they aren't really focused in just one area, they just happen late evening like my meds are wearing down.
