Go see this movie- A Beautiful Mind

Posted by 3 Beer Effect on December 30, 2001, at 14:33:23

This is the best movie i've seen in awhile & will definitely strike a chord with anyone who is on or has taken psychiatric medications.
But be foreworned, bring some tissues- I'm a 23 year old Male, & almost started bawling!

Also, the movie might make you question the effectiveness of your psychiatric medications, so you unstable or severely ill types shouldn't see this movie!

I totally agree that this was the best movie I have seen awhile! Russell Crowe was remarkable. And I think anyone who has had experience with mood disorders can appreciate the story at a deeper level.

I just saw it tonight. A good movie about a mental illness (in this case -schizophrenia).

It is very good and won awards in the entire world. I usually don't like biographies much, but this one talk about not only John Nash, but the people and institutions around him. I have not seen the movie yet, but from the previews, I don't think it's faithful to the book... They don't even mention he's a Nobel Prize in Economics (previews - movie: I don't know !)! What he did in economics was ground breaking and lead to an entire new litterature (non-zero sum game theory). The 3 winners of the Economics Nobel Prize this year (2001) also won it for their work in game theory... Anyway, the book is also very good, and one does not need to be an economist to enjoy it. It has universal appeal. The writer is very good at explaining concepts (Nash is a mathematician), eras, historical importance of people (Openheimer for e.g.) and events.

...much to my surprise.

Although it is romanced. No mention of his extramarital affairs and his illegitmate son (named John, as his legitimate one !), and his divorce and 2nd mariage, if I remember the book well.

The book is richer in many aspects, but I must say, the movie is good too.

By all means, see the movie, but follow-ups to this thread (unless they have to do with medication) should be redirected to Psycho-Social-Babble. Thanks, and happy new year,

Bob
