Are MAOIs considered effective for ruminations and the like?

Yes, although ruminations -- obsessing over some subject, usually a source of anxiety -- aren't usually so much of an OCD symptom as a generalized anxiety or depression symptom.
For true OCD, MAOIs may help if the first-line treatments (SSRIs, clomipramine, and augmentation strategies such as Risperdal, Klonopin, and BuSpar) don't work.
I hope this helps. Good luck, whatever you decide to do.

Elizabeth may be in a better position to know than I, but I thought that rumination, or at least a certain kind, definitely is considered a branch of OCD. At a web site that I believe is called OCD Online, the writer talks about a form called "pure obsessional." Most people mistakenly think of OCD as restricted to people with excessive "checking" behaviors and fear of contamination.
Perhaps these boundaries aren't that meaningful in the end. But clomipramine, considered the most effective medication for OCD, does help some people with their ruminations. And they often are quite anxious and depressed as well.

Yeah... I had a little honeymoon with Clomipramine -- more than a year, and it was a very nasty, nasty drug. Massive weightgain, sweating, urinary hesitancy, etc, etc, etc. I've been on many drugs and most of them help with ruminations to some extent as long as they have a 5HT action to them. I've never been on an MAOI, however, and was kind of wondering if that class would have a similiar effect to the drugs that exhibit reuptake inhibition. Something tells me that if I went on an MAOI, though, I'd be in a world of side-effect hurt not much different from Clomipramine.

I think the adverse effects of MAOIs have been overplayed -- if this trial doesn't work out, they may be worth a try. (The main thing I'd be concerned about is the long washout period between Prozac and MAOIs.) I posted a response to your post about your new cocktail...take a look.

Elizabeth:
I think you may be talking about the wrong Bob. There is no Prozac in my cocktail. I appreciated your post anyhow, though, as it was my question that you answered.

You're right; I'm not sure what I was thinking there!
