Has anyone heard of glycine as being effective in the treatment of mental illness?
Thanks.

There is mounting evidence that dysfunctional glycine
receptor binding sites on "NMDA" type receptors
may be responsible for symptoms of schizophrenia
and possibly other disorders.I don't think that taking the amino acid would
be effective. This was tried, but the effective dose
was REALLY high. Way too high to be considered
a practical treatment route (I looked into this).
Researchers are looking into other meds that
are more directed at partially binding to the glycine receptor
site to mediate its effects; D-cylcoserine is one such research
med. Again, this is pretty ground breaking research
so I wouldn't expect anything in the market for
quite a while if it proves useful. What are you interested in treating?

Hi John,
Thank you for this information.
I am interested in treating schizotypal tendencies and am looking for anything other than neuroleptics that might do the trick.Shelley.
This is the end of the thread.
