Am I on too many drugs?

Posted by Dona on November 9, 2001, at 18:53:46

My depression gets worse every day. I can barely get out of bed and if I knew of a fool-proof plan, I would probably just end it all. I take prozac 80mg, zyprexa 10mg, remeron 45mg and now the dr. wants to add effexor 37.5mg. Seems like too many meds and nothing is working. I do not want to go into a hospital but I sure would like to see the bright of day again. How do I stop the zyprexa and remeron?-I think they are keeping me in this blunted state where I cannot concentrate or do anything. I am SO TIRED of being tired.

Dona - I'm a firm believer in the proposition that the wrong drugs in the wrong amounts can be the problem and not the solution. This has been true in my case, and I've also noticed that in a couple of instances, i felt hugely much better after I went off a drug. That's not to say that you don't need to then replace it with something else, just maybe a wash out period first. I'm not familiar enough with zyprexa or remeron to tell you how to get off - I'd just suggest to your pdoc that you need to do something different - it seems like you don't have much to lose if you're feeling that awful on all of this medication.

I think Mair is right on the mark. It is hard as hell when you feel so damn tired, but you somehow have to be very, very forward and tell your doctor what you just told us. You, like each of us, have the absolute right to the ultimate quality of care, rich or poor...whatever. Just because a doctor has a diploma on the wall *doesn't* mean he is a GOOD doctor. You have to assert your feelings. Even if you write something down, plan what you are going to say to the doc....bring someone if you can...you DESERVE the best....we all do.

Best wishes..

Jay
