Hi, since the initial thread is so far above, I thought I'd respond to you down here - you asked how much Zyprexa do I take and at what time: I take 2.5 mg about 3 hours before I plan to go to bed at night. The reason for this timing is that I found that it does NOT knock me out or even begin to make me drowsy for quite some time after I take it.

I had told this to my pdoc and that same day another patient had called her to say that she (the patient) needed to take Zyprexa a few hours before bedtime because it took that long to kick in!

From what I know (and it's not a whole lot!), your experience with 2.5 mg of Zyprexa sounds "normal" - at that dose it won't do much to put you to sleep, but my pdoc claims and I am proof(!) that it does help lift one's mood/depression and also calm racing thoughts.

Depending on how you fare, you may want to increase it to 5 mg/night, but give the 2.5 mg a chance first!
Good luck,
-Janelle

I totally agree with Janelle. I usually take my dose of Zyprexa around 5:00pm to 6:00pm, so that it helps me fall asleep at 8:00 or 9:00. It's sedative properties seem to take at least 3 hours to kick in, for me anyway. Its greatest benefit, in terms of sleep, is in the quality of sleep, not so much in initiating sleep. When I wake, I feel like I really slept good. Other sedating meds I've tried, such as Remeron, tricyclics, Serzone, Trazodone, were much better at initiating sleep, but they provided lousy quality sleep. Even though I slept solid, I felt like the quality of sleep was pretty poor. In my experimentations, nothing has been better than Zyprexa for high quality sleep.

Funny, I didn't see this post until 10:00pm. I read an earlier post of JohnL's and decided to try 5 mg tonight since I am to call my pdoc anyway tomorrow with a report. I took the Zyprexa at 7:00 and so far, 3 hours later, I feel nothing. I also am not going to take my other sleep meds until I feel it "hit" or 11:00...whichever comes first. I am doing that to see how the Zyprexa feels without Xanax & benedryl. At 11 I will have to take the other pills because otherwise I will NEVER be able to wake up tomorrow.
