Paxil won't work anymore, What next?

Posted by zarathustra on July 20, 2001, at 22:59:48

Hello

I have tried many ADs (prozac, zoloft, serzone, effexor, manerix, wellbutrin, and zyprexa)
The only one to ever work was paxil, It changed my life profoundly but I naively stopped it due to sexual side effects, and tried all of the above mentioned drugs with no effect. Now Im back on paxil (the trade off is worth it) and its not working at all, I started on 30mgs for a month, and have been on 50mgs for the last two months......... nothing, it just wont work anymore! and strangely there are no sexual side effects.

I am starting to think that I'm not deppresed, because I don't respond. Should I try an MAOI, I will try anything but I am scared of the diet.

Sincerely,
Andrew

Andrew,
The phenomenon you have encountered is not unusual. No one really knows why that happens. It sounds to me like it is time to think in terms of two drugs instead of one. You might consider combining Paxil+Zyprexa, or Prozac+Zyprexa. The Zyprexa will not only turbocharge the AD, but will help with sexual function and sleep as well. It's not unusual to see drug A not work, and drug B not work, but the same drug A and B combined is like magic.

Strange how shit like that happens, eh? Unfortunately even the best doctors can only offer "theories" for this "poop-out". I've read literature describing different techniques to get previously efficable drugs to become reactivated... I've read things such as tampering with the dosages, such as stopping for a while and then trying to jump start it with a suddenly high dose... or augmenting with other drugs, such as low dose Lithium, Pindolol (is that the one?), and even Ritalin or other stimulants. Don't sweat it, you WILL find a med that will work (Try Remeron, it's a powerful SSRI, and SNRI as well!). Good luck sugar!
