I have tried to quit effexor both ways, by weaning myself off and by quitting cold turkey. Nothing seems to work for the side effects. I did not start effexor for the anxiety, my doctor subscribed it for fibromialgia symptoms, and the drug also just so happened to help my anxiety attacks(alot). But now it is time to get off. Even though it a a wonderful drug that has helped me alot. Does anyone have any tips on getting through the day with all the terrible side effects?

Why do you want to quit Effexor if it has worked very well?

I want to quit effexor because I can't stand the tought of waking up every mourning and having to take a pill to be who I am. I feel like the person I am is a chemicial, and the pill controls my whole life. Effexor is great. I just want to be drug free so to speak. I'm only 19 years old and I feel like I have a lot of time to find out who I am, and I want to see who I am with out the effexor. It may all sound crazy but I can't have a pill running my life any more, I have to see if I can deal with life with out it. If I can't I'll just have to go back on effexor or something else to help me through my days.

Hi GinaC. I am 10 days Fxr xr free. I weaned down from 300mg/day by reducing 75mg every two weeks. I then reduced to 37.5 mg. The last week I added 20 mg Prozac & experienced almost no discontinuation problems. I am basically med-free after 18 mos of non-stop meds & feel pretty good. But I won't hesitate to get back on them if I feel it's necessary. I was hospitalized before & I don't want it to happen again. Please discuss your decision to stop fxr with your doc & ask him about some of the suggestions found on PB for minimizing discontiuation fx. Hope this helps. Good luck
