I know I'm going to catch it for this.... but I can't help but notice.... When it comes to Effexor... it seems like people feel the same way... wether or not they quit cold turkey... or wean. But weaning seems to draw out the pain?
Seriously.... I know it goes against the medical logic.. I mean, you'll have less pain by taking smaller doses... and letting your body get used to not having it... but is that really true? Sure, it's true in theory... but looking at this board...I'm not sure it wouldn't be better just to quit cold turkey and get it over with. I definatley wouldn't think that before... but reading all these posts... the weaning doesn't seem to be helping any except in postponing?
This isn't my opinion necessarily... just what I've observed on both this board... and circle friends. Any comments?

Hi Michele. I am 6 days FXR xr free after 13 mos. at 300mg/day. I tapered off reducing the dose by 75mg every 2 weeks. The last week I went to 37.5/day & began Prozac 20mg. as has been suggested. I was fortunate to experience little or no discontinuation fx. I don't know if I would have had the same outcome by quitting cold turkey but I was not willing to risk it. The FXR was the only AD to help my depression & I would use it again if I need it. After 18mos. of non-stop meds I felt well enough to stop almost all psychmeds.(I was also taking Neurontin & Topamax, & still take Klonopin occassionally) I hope you're doing OK. Take care

> This isn't my opinion necessarily... just what I've observed on both this board... and circle friends. Any comments?I tried 3 times to "wean" off Effexor XR by alternating days at 37.5 mg. I was a wreck. After resuming use for a few days, this last time I weaned by reducding the dose but taking every day.
2 weeks at 18 mg, 1 week at 10-12 mg. then I stopped. I did get some vertigo, headache, and wooshing sounds in my head, but nothing like the previous attempts. I'd say weaning worked to diminish withdrawal for me... I'm only 4 days off it now so far...

I ahve quite Effexor cold turkey before, and it was total hell.. So bad I was on the verge of suicide just to stop it all happening. I am currently weaning off slowly, and having no problems.. I am down from 300mg to 150mg so far and have had no withdrawal effects.. I am doing it very very slowly though.

Wow..... I really feel for you all that are going thru this withdrawal. How awful!! I got lucky, and thank god for that. I know I'm going to hear it.... but I admit, I get totally frustrated when I read the posts about new to AD'er trying this drug for the first time? I recognize that it is probably great... if nothing else works.... yet, people... even reading these horrible posts... still decide to start it, even if they haven't tried anything else. I just don't get it. My heart goes out to all of you..... this is such a horrible, horrible thing to have to go thru.
This is the end of the thread.
