Wellbutrin SR available in UK? Help!

Posted by Elisabeth on April 30, 2001, at 20:11:21

Hi...I really find this forum excellent. Am moving back to UK permanently and I have found out my hormone replacement drugs are not available...so am taking a supply.

There is a mental health site from Norfolk I use to check drug name cross refs and it does not have this drug on it...has it been taken off the NHS for depression, etc??? (I know it's been used for smoking cessation...but it was not its first purpose).

Now I am wondering if Wellbutrin (bupropion) SR is now available in UK? My husband, a Brit, who went ahead of me says some bad press has been going around because of the seizure thing. Seeing as how I will never have a psydoc there and have to rely on a GP...are the GP's prescribing it?? I have had no problems with it at all.

So far it's the only thing that's helping me and I have been on anti-d's and other meds since 1981!!! My hormones with the testosterone help so much for my early onset menopause...that has me really annoyed, that Estratest is not in Europe or UK at all...but hopefully only need them for a short while and taking a supply.

But the Wellbutrin/bupropion/Zyban or whatever...Sustained Release... is that available on the NHS???

Thanks so much from any Brits who post, or others who know.

As far as I know, Wellbutrin is not available in the U.K. or in Japan. Perhaps someone could recommend an international mail-order pharmacy to you.

Hi. I think the Board for Clinical Excellence (a misnomer if ever there was one) has yet to approve Buproprion for depr. However Zyban *is* available on the NHS for smoking cessation; a friend of mine was prescribed it just 5 wks ago.

Zyban has made front-page news lately (about 25 related deaths reported, though most victims had serious co-morbid conditions), and I'm hearing GPs are being a little more circumspect with their prescribing. Find y'self a savvy doc tho', & you shouldn't have any problems.

Worst comes to worst, you can legally import 90 days supply of Wellbutrin from any no. of prescription-free int'l pharmacies.

J.

Thanks for the info...I am

very grateful to both of you. My GP has had written reports from my US psychiatrist before and respects his recommendations...so he's doing another update that I am doing well on the Wellbutrin and hopefully it will be OK.

It's so expensive...the idea of taking 90 days with me...UGH...but if I must I will...thanks.

Am spending over $350 for my hormone stock up as it is. I don't have a prescription plan here as I am on Medicare for this depression disability some 10 years now.

Again...cheers for being so kind to a newbie. Will be out of touch for a while after I move...but when I get back on line will rejoin the forum. This is the MOST interesting site and group I have found. Keep up your great rapport!

Yes, Sherry....headache...the dull kind is most annoying. I try to drink more liquids to see if it helps...found that a wee nibble of a carbohydrate food helps that. I like not being so hungry (but not starving myself), so I feel OK about having some potato chips or popcorn..the headache goes for a bit.

I must stay away from caffeine though...it made head worse and made me more "stimulated"...Wellbutrin is really like an amphetime for sure...and I thought my psydoc here in US was joking. Me an anxious/depressive getting reflief from an upper!!!!

Did your headaches ever go away? I have been struggling to even go to work this week..
Although I havent been very stimulated because my pdoc has me on 1500 mg of depakote and topamax along with prozac..the combination makes me tired. I am bipolar with rapid cycling.

I am sorry your headaches are so bad...I am only taking the Wellbutrin and no other day meds...so maybe it's your cocktail?

Hang in there if it's working...but if headaches still linger...tell your doctor. I find them so hard to deal with... and OTC headache tablets don't seem to help at all. Headaches only lift a bit if I can get out and walk or eat a bit of carbos, but come back when I am not active or have not nibbled.

My mum was bipolar and I am unipolar... I hope you soon find the right meds for you (((S)))
