Weekly Prozac?

Posted by Marie1 on February 28, 2001, at 7:47:37

I understand Prozac will be available shortly (early March) in a weekly pill form. Does anyone know of any negatives to taking it this way? Will it be based on 20 mgs/day? Personally, I'll be glad to cut down on my daily comsumption of pills. Could this be contraindicated for anyone? Thanks for any knowledgable feedback.

I just read the pill is 90mg. I'm wondering will it help with sexual sides? or will that stay the same? When the heck are they gonna fix that?

Marie - I heard throught the grapevine that the weekly Prozac release date may be held up because of some concerns about heart problems (eg QT interval). I was talking with a couple of the doctors about this a week or two ago, but haven't seen the news release myself. Personally, I don't think that I could remember to take a drug once a day rather than once a week.

In a recent study of regular (daily) vs weekly Prozac, after 25 weeks of continuation therapy 37% of weekly Prozac users relapsed, whereas only 26% of daily Prozac users did (and this was in the confines of a clinical trial, where patients are more likely to be followed up, to maintain compliance).

For start-up side effects, "diarrhea" and "back pain" were seen more often in the weekly Prozac group. As for continuing side effects "thinking abnormally" and "nervousness" were more common with the weekly Prozac.

Hope this helps - Cam

Thanks for your reply, Cam. I think I read that the FDA approved weekly Prozac yesterday (Feb. 27).
