wellbutrin: cycling

Posted by terra miller on February 21, 2001, at 18:19:17

Has anybody else been really sensitive to the amount of Wellbutrin SR in their body? I take 150mg and two hours later the "energy" kicks in and lasts for 2 hours, then slowly decreases for the next 2 hours or so of real normalcy, then all hours following are "crash and burn, hostility and shortfuse, stay out of my way because I'm totally crabby... and really tired." (I've never had such a short fuse or such tiredness. I don't "get" tired!)

I saw my doc today and we're going to try dosing 100mg Wellbutrin SR in the morning and another 100mg in the afternoon to see if that doesn't level out. This will start my 4th week on this med.

Familiar to anyone?

Also, with the "crash and burn" time it's like I'm either having a panic attack or a heart attack: chest hurts, short of breath, pulse increases, hot flashes. I've been treating it with tums (in case it's a stomach acid thing) and ativan (in case it really is panic but it's just presenting kind of strange.)

Familiar to anyone?

I'm "attempting" :-) to treat PTSD symptoms. With this drug I'm finding it harder to locate personal experiences, compared to people who've had Zoloft or Effexor for example.

Thanks a lot.

Terra.

Yes! Wellbutrin caused me extreme irritability, even hostility plus very rapid cycling. I didn't have a clue that I was bipolar then and my docs must not have either, as they never suggested such a diagnosis to me. It is still reported in the literature that Wellbutrin is much less likely to cause cycling in comparison to tricylics or other ADs. From my experience and anecdotal reports that is really hard for me to believe. If you have this kind of a reaction it might be best to ask your doc if you fit into the bipolar spectrum. It's a matter of your well being, not of labels. ADs are not always the answer. Sometimes they do more harm than good. They should always be used judiciously.

Blessings,

Chris A.

I think you would really benefit from buspirone augmentation. It would accomplish two things: calming you down, and speeding up the action of the other antidepressant:
