I have noticed that there are numerous problems with Effexor. Why is it prescribed over other anti-depressants?

Because it has less of the anticholinergic and sexual side-effects than the SSRIs. It works on both serotonin and norepinephrine--unlike the SSRIs which work primarily on serotonin.
I think that Effexor is the best drug on the market. 2nd place goes to Remeron.
